Some Myths Expelled
Isn't the Atlantic very cold?
Certainly not. Ask the millions of tourists who
flock to the Portuguese Algarve each year. The water around Isla
Canela and Islantilla is even slightly warmer than it is in
Portugal because the Guadiana River moves warm water out on top of
the colder seawater. Furthermore the ocean floor along the coast
slopes very gently away from the shore so the shallow water near
land becomes warmer as it is heated by the sun. In late April the
water temperature climbs above twenty degrees Celsius and it
doesn't drop below twenty again until late October.
Does it get as much sun as the Med?
It actually gets more! There are an average of 320
days of sun per annum on the Spanish Algarve. In the summer the
heat is not as intense as the Costa del Sol and is much more
pleasant, especially when enjoyed on a lovely sandy beach with a
glass of something cold to hand!
Airlines
One of the important considerations when choosing
an area in which to invest is the ease of access from the UK.
Many British people have purchased holiday homes
in Europe based on cheap airfares from a particular airlineonly to
find that the service is subsequently withdrawn leaving only very
expensive and/or inconvenient alternatives.
In addition to the inconvenience and expense these
factors can have a material effect on property values. The Spanish
Algarve is well served with many airlines. Furthermore for extra
security both Faro (35 mins) and Seville (60 mins) airports are an
easy drive away. Jerez is further but still practical.
Below are the airlines that serve the area from
the UK:
Airline Flight Details
- easyJet Flies to Faro from London, East Midlands
and Bristol
- Iberia Flies from several UK locations to Seville
and Jerez
- Ryanair Flies from Stansted to Jerez and from
Dublin to Faro
- bmibaby Flies from East Midlands airport to
Faro
- Air2000 Operates flights from all major UK
airports to Faro
- Air Portugal Flies from Heathrow, Gatwick and
Manchester to Faro
- Monarch Flies from London, Birmingham and
Manchester to Faro
Car Rental
We recommend hiring a car to get to and from the
airport. It also allows you greater freedom in to explore the area.
All major car rental companies are represented at all the airports.
If travelling to Faro there is no charge to drive the car into
Spain from Portugal. Furthermore there are no border checks or
delays. Just drive over the bridge that divides the two
countries.
